  2. - PhD in Geography from the University of Bonn, Germany, (2006), with a thesis on landslide hazards and risk assessment.

Attività di ricerca / Research interests

Guzzetti ha lavorato e lavora in diversi settori di ricerca in geomorfologia, geologia applicata, geologia e geo-informatica, fra i quali: (1) identificazione e mappatura delle frane in differenti ambienti climatici, geologici e morfologici, (2) analisi della tipologia e della distribuzione spaziale dei dissesti in relazione alle condizioni geologiche e strutturali, (3) sviluppo di metodi per la determinazione della suscettibilità e della pericolosità da frana, (4) previsione temporale dei dissesti, utilizzando informazioni storico-cronachistiche e carte inventario multi-temporali, (5) studio delle distribuzioni di frequenza delle dimensioni dei dissesti, (6) acquisizione e utilizzo di informazioni storiche su frane e inondazioni per la valutazione della pericolosità e del rischio geo-idrologico, (7) definizione della vulnerabilità da frana per differenti elementi a rischio, inclusa la popolazione, (8) definizione e mappatura del rischio da frana, inclusa la valutazione del rischio sociale ed individuale, (9) definizione di soglie di pioggia e idrologiche per il possibile innesco di fenomeni franosi, (10) morfometria generale, (11) applicazione di tecnologie GIS e Web-GIS per l’analisi e la pubblicazione di informazioni geomorfologiche, e (12) divulgazione di informazioni sulla pericolosità geo-idrologica e sul rischio ad essa connesso.

 

Fausto Guzzetti research interests include: (i) detection and mapping of landslides in different climatic, geological and morphological environments, (ii) analysis of landslide types and patterns in relation to geology and topography, (iii) landslide susceptibility and hazard assessment, using statistical techniques and GIS technology, (iv) temporal forecasting of landslides, using archive information and multi-temporal inventory maps, (v) statistics of landslide size, including number, area, volume, and their relationships, (vi) collection, organization and use of historical information on damaging natural events for risk assessment and reduction, (vii) vulnerability to landslides of different elements at risk, including the population, (viii) landslide risk assessment and mapping, and the determination of individual and societal risk levels, (ix) rainfall and hydrological thresholds for the possible initiation of landslides, (x) general morphometry, (xi) exploitation of GIS and Web-GIS technology for the analysis and dissemination of geomorphological information, (xii) dissemination of information on natural hazards and risk.

 


 

Curriculum Vitae

E' Dirigente di Ricerca del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), e dal dicembre 2011 al novembre 2019 è stato Direttore dell’Istituto di Ricerca per la Protezione Idrogeologica (IRPI) del CNR. Dal settembre 2009 al novembre 2011 è stato Direttore f.f. del CNR IRPI. Al CNR IRPI di Perugia, Guzzetti guida un gruppo di ricerca multidisciplinare in geomorfologia (http://geomorphology.irpi.cnr.it). Laureato in Scienze Geologiche all’Università degli Studi di Perugia (1983) con una tesi in Geologia Strutturale, ha ottenuto un PhD in Geografia dall’Università di Bonn (2006), con una tesi intitolata Landslide Hazard and Risk Assessment. Nel 1985-1986 è stato presso l’U.S. Geological Survey, a Menlo Park, dove ha lavorato alla realizzazione di carte inventario delle frane a piccola scala sotto la guida del Dr. Earl E. Brabb. Dal 1992 al 2002 ha coordinato il Progetto AVI - Aree Vulnerate Italiane del CNR GNDCI, producendo un vasto archivio d’informazioni relative a frane e inondazioni storiche in Italia. Ha partecipato a diversi progetti europei, fra i quali Damocles, E2-C2, Eurorisk-Preview e RiskAware. E’ sato responsabile scientifico del progetto MORFEO dell’Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI), per l’utilizzo di dati e tecnologie di osservazione della Terra per l’identificazione e la mappatura delle frane, per il monitoraggio dei movimenti franosi, e per la previsione dei dissesti. E’ stato il coordinatore del progetto europeo FP7 DORIS: Ground Deformations Risk Scenarios: an Advanced Assessment Service, per l’utilizzo di tecnologie di osservazione della Terra per il monitoraggio di movimenti franosi e fenomeni di subsidenza, ed è il coordinatore del progetto europeo FP7 LAMPRE: LAndslide Modelling and tools for vulnerability assessment Preparedness and REcovery management. Per il Dipartimento Nazionale della Protezione Civile coordina un progetto di ricerca e sviluppo per la previsione di frane indotte dalle precipitazioni e per la valutazione del rischio a esse connesso. E' stato Presidente della Natural Hazards Division della European Geosciences Union (EGU) dalla ha ricevuto lo EGU Union Service Award (2008). Nel 2008, ha ricevuto lo International Landslide Research Group Distinguished Leadership Award. Fondatore della rivista internazionale Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS) è attualmente executive editor della rivista. E' stato il coordinatore delle attività tecniche e scientifiche svolte dal CNR nell'area colpita dal terremoto dell'Aquila del 6 Aprile 2009. Dall’aprile 2009 al maggio 2010 è stato responsabile unico del Gruppo Nazionale per la Difesa dalle Catastrofi Idrogeologiche (GNDCI) del CNR. Dal 2012 è componente della Commissione Nazionale per la previsione e la prevenzione dei Grandi Rischi, Organo del Servizio Nazionale di protezione civile.

 

A senior research scientist with the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), since December 2011 to November 2019 he was the Director of the CNR Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI). From September 2009 to November 2011 he was deputy Director of the Institute. After graduating in Geology from the University of Perugia (1983), he received a PhD in geography from the University of Bonn (2006). From 1985 to 1986 he was visiting scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey, Menlo Park, California, where he prepared small-scale landslide inventory maps under the supervision of Dr. Earl E. Brabb. T The author and co-author of more than 90 papers in international journals, he has coordinated ten special issues of international, peer-reviewed journals. He participated in a number of national, European and US projects. From 1992 and 2002 he coordinated the project AVI – Aree Vulnerate Italiane, producing a large catalogue of information on historical landslide and flood events in Italy. He was principal investigator for the MORFEO project (www.morfeo-project.org/), of the Italian Space Agency (ASI), for the exploitation of Earth observation data and technology for improved landslide detection, monitoring and forecasting. He was principal investigator for the FP7 DORIS project (www.doris-project.eu/), an advanced downstream service for the detection, mapping, monitoring and forecasting of ground deformations at different temporal and spatial scales. He is principal investigator for the FP7 LAMPRE project (www.lampre-project.eu/) LAndslide Modelling and tools for vulnerability assessment Preparedness and REcovery management. For the Italian National Department of Civil Protection he is principal investigator of a project aimed at fostering the national capabilities to forecast rainfall induced landslides and the associated risk in Italy. He served as President of the Natural Hazards Division of the European Geosciences Union (EGU, www.egu.eu), and received the EGU Union Service Award (2008). An initiator of the EGU journal Natural Hazards and Earth System Sciences (NHESS, www.natural-hazards-and-earth-system-sciences.net),  he is executive editor for the journal. He coordinated the CNR technical and scientific activities in the area affected by the April 6, 2009, L’Aquila earthquake. From 2012 he is member of the “Commissione Nazionale Grandi Rischi".
