Biography:


Education

Master Degree in Physics with full marks (110/110) from the University of Perugia, Italy (1991). Thesis title: “Cosmic antihelium detection in a silicon calorimeter”.

PhD in Earth Sciences and Geotechnologies from the University of Perugia, Italy (2014). Thesis title: “Statistics of terrestrial and extraterrestrial landslides”.
 

Research topics

Before 2007, she worked in the fields of astrophysics and particle physics in international collaborations with NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), ESA (European Space Agency), and CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire). She was involved mainly in: (1) data analysis in astrophysics experiments, (2) development of simulation codes for the simulation of particles-matter interactions, (3) calibration and validation of particle detectors and microelectronic circuits for space and terrestrial applications. At present, she works in the terrestrial and planetary geomorphology, and in the natural hazard fields. Her main research topics are: (1) definition and validation of empirical rainfall thresholds for the possible initiation of landslides, (2) reconstruction of rainfall events, and of rainfall conditions responsible for landslide occurrence, (3) landslide early warning systems, (4) detection and mapping of landslides on Mars, the Moon, and Mercury, and (5) comparison between terrestrial and extraterrestrial landslide size (area and volume) distributions.

 

Curriculum Vitae

Research scientist with the Italian National Research Council (CNR) at the Research Institute for Geo-Hydrological Protection (IRPI) in Perugia. She graduated in Physics from the University of Perugia (1991). After the Master Degree, she had a fellowship with the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN) (1992-1994), and with the Italian National Research Council (1995) at the Physics Department of the University of Perugia. Later, she had a fellowship with the CNR at the Institute for Space Astrophysics (IAS) in Rome (1996), and a fellowship with the CNR/NATO Program at the École Polytechnique in Paris (1997-1998). She was a research fellow with the University of Perugia (1999-2003) and with the University of Trieste (2004). She had contracts for research work with INFN (2005 and 2007) and with the University of Perugia (2006). She also carried out teaching activities for the Faculty of Pharmacy (1999) and the Faculty of Engineering (2006) from the University of Perugia. From 2008 to 2011 she was a research fellow at the CNR IRPI in Perugia. In 2014, she received a PhD in Earth Sciences and Geotechnologies from the University of PerugiaShe is co-author of more than 40 papers in international journals, and of 5 contributions in books.
